Three-year-old Arabians. Injection of French blood
As already mentioned, also among the three-year-old Arabians, the major roles were played by riding horses owned by Russian Murat Karaev, trained in Służewiec. However, this time, he reached for the horses of the French, not Russian, pedigrees. At the end of 2012, he purchased a few riding horses of excellent origin at auctions in France and the Netherlands. The blood of French stallions enriched the Polish races not only in this way. Many private breeders have already bred in their stud farms offspring of the national mares, covered four years ago by Nougatine, Marwan I or Dormane. Cedunia (Nougatin – Cesia / Pers)
Wadi Nur versus Nougatin
The first races for young Arabians belonged not only to the descendants of these sires, but also to Polish Wadi Nur. As a result, in the race for the Arra Award (group I), three horses coming from Nougatine finally met: Cedunia, Aziz (from mare Aaran/Borysław) and Epione (Elizma/Europejczyk) and three “wadinurs” trained by Andrzej Wójtowicz: Nicolas (Nicol/Majos), Grekus (Greka/Major) and Cserkses (Casandra/Fawor). This competition was undoubtedly won by “nugatins”, winning the first three places. Later in the season, this trend continued.
Westim off season favourite for the Derby
Nougatin offspring won the most registered outside-group races: Sambora and Bask (Westim), Europejczyk (Cedunia), PZHKA (Afrah), Koheilan I (Muna) and Czort (Muzahim). What is more, the Award of Amurath was won by Ziko, son of Marwan I. Very good results were also achieved by Cerwing (Nougatin), Amira and Edorma (Dormane), and Ahmad (Nougatin) at the end of the season, which gained two victories each.
Sambora: Westim ahead of Cerwing
The most impressive of this group was undoubtedly an unbeaten in four starts Westim (Nougatin-Wienerva/Santhos), halfsibling of the Derby winner Wares Westim. He won the race for the Bask Award far ahead of his rivals, while he had to put in more effort racing for the Sambora Award, but he he finished in a convincing style, beating such strong horses as: Cerwing (Nougatin-Celineczka/Pesal), Ziko (Marwan I-Zbójna Góra/Egon), Muna (Nougain-Masza/Ataman), Wilden (Ganges-Wilda/Gazal Al Shaqab) and Afrah (Nougatin-Almina/Furiat). He is now the first candidate to win the Derby.
Ancely and Dhobi Al Mels class of their own
When born in France horses of Murat Karaev, Ancely (Dahess-Djurdjura/Al Sakbe) and Dhobi Al Mels (Akbar-Paola Al Mels/Dormane), entered the fight for valuable prizes, the dominance of the Polish bred riding horses came to en end. Although sensational in the first part of the season Cedunia beat them in racing for the European Award, this result was controversial. First of all, it was the obvious result of failure to put in more effort by jockey Turgaev on Ancely, for which he was punished with a licence suspension by the Committee for two months (the Committee of Appeal changed this penalty into a fine of PLN 12,000). The roles reversed in subsequent starts. In the race for Białka Award, Ancely and Dhobi took over the third at the finish line Afrah up by 19 lengths, setting an amazing for three-year-old horses track record in the track of 2,000 m – 2’14,4″, and in the race for the Pierrot Award, they again fought a battle for the victory, beating Dostatok. Between these performances, Dhobi also won the Ursynów Award.
Finish of the run for the Pierrot Award
Less prominent, although good, was the third of Karaev’s horses – ? Faucon du Loup (Darweesh-Sirene du Loup/Al Sakbe). He won two group races, and he finished second at the end of the season in racing for the Czort Award, after Muzahim (Nougatin-Małmazja/Wermut).
Sensational Esponna
Offspring of Wadi Nur performed very well in the first starts, but clearly defeated in competitions with daughters and sons of French stallions. The best of the Arabians trained by Andrzej Wójtowicz turned out to be Nicolas, which won in his debut, and then gained a few valuable results in the rest of the season; he was second in racing for the Bask Award and Savvannah Award, third in Amurath and Kwestura Award, and fourth in Eldon and Arra Award. Across the whole season, only Esponna (Ontario HF-Elegantka z Izb/Mocny), trained by Maciej Jodłowski, successfully competed for valuable prizes with Nougatin’s offspring, Marwan I and Dormane. She was fourth in her debut, but in the next performance she was victorious, defeating Paker (Nougatin-Pasima/Ecaho), and two weeks later she triumphed in the race for the Emael Award, surpassing heavily favoured Ziko. She was unluckily defeated by Afrah in the race for the PZHKA Award, while she finished fourth in the race for the Ursynów Award (after Ziko and before stallion Faucon du Loup. In the race for the Amurath Award, she was beaten only by Ziko and ended the season with an undisputed victory in racing for the Sasanka Award. It is interesting whether the mare will also be strong next year. This seems likely because offspring of American stallion Ontario HF copes very well also at the age of four or five years – the best examples are the Derby vice-winner Wielki Damati, Oaks winner Wielka Damira and Oaks vice-winner Netka. It is worth mentioning trained by Dorota Kałuba Bint Mabi (Akbars-Bint Madonah/Eldon), which started the season quite late and won the race for the Orla Award in great style at the beginning of November.
